SKICITY

SkiCity

01.05.12

Studio Equator were excited to be part of the first indoor ski centre in Australia.
The technology of rolling indoor ski slopes was brought from Holland, and urban skiing in Australia is now available, and unique to SkiCity, Moorabbin.

The surface of the slopes is a tailor made special form of carpet-like material that moves upwards so that the skier sliding against the direction of movement of the ski slope remains in one place or moves downward or upwards depending on the amount of resistance they wish to engage when braking.

The ski surface is driven by an electro-motor, and the speed and angle of incline are adjustable, allowing for a challenging and enjoyable experience for beginners, experts and everyone in between.

In designing the interior space, we wanted to be able to integrate the machinery into a nice environment.

Our concept was based on an urban experience of skiing, and we used large scale images of mountains, overlaid with blue geometric shapes to achieve the feeling of being on the slopes, but in a contemporary way.

Likewise, in the café area we used x2 plywood deer heads to create a modern spin on the stereotypical mountain chalet.

Our design encompasses the ski hall, café and a small retail area where customers can purchase ski equipment.

We also designed an upstairs bar, which is yet to be built.
