“Barriga Ilena, Corazon Contento!”

With the success of the Tapas y Bar extension back in 2011 and Simply Spanish’s popular paella recipes, the client’s decided to open two more Simply Spanish restaurants, one in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD and other in the middle of the ‘hustle ‘n’ bustle’ of the Queen Victoria Market.

Taking their traditional paella recipe to the streets, Simply Spanish realized how much Melbourne loved their recipe.  The two new restaurants are based on their traditional Spanish cuisine, highlighting their homemade paella and Simply Spanish brand name.

Studio Equator had the privilege of working with Simply Spanish team again to develop a consistent brand image using the existing design but finishing them with a more modern and contemporary take.  The aim was to create two new restaurants that gave off that friendly and cultural Simply Spanish interior and used the same colour scheme within an inviting and enjoyable space.

Based on the original design, Studio Equator continued the Spanish theme and textures throughout the two restaurants.  The same timber detail and Spanish tile finishes were used for the counters and floor, with structured black steel framing around the dining area to give a hint of industrial chic.

To complement this feature, the designers kept the custom graphic wallpaper made up of Spanish icons illustrations that are unique to Simply Spanish (bulls, matadors, flamenco, dancers, etc), much like the previous restaurants.

Neon signage was used to highlight the matador bull logo and the Spanish expression that has become iconic to the Simply Spanish brand, "Barriga llena, Corazon Contento" which means "Full Belly, Happy Heart".

The designer’s utilised the paella trays to design and produce custom light fittings and signage displays.  The light fittings are unique for its type; designers installing a half-painted light globe to the middle of the paella trays and mounted against recycled vinyl stencilled tiles in red & olive tones as a background for the effective light and shadowing the fittings produce. Studio Equator’s signature Lucky Beer Chandelier’s also make an appearance in both Simply Spanish restaurants, giving the venue a quirky and industrial chic feel.

Above the bar, cardboard tubes have been reclaimed and recycled to produce an effective feature above the paella area, in a colour scheme of red and yellow, symbolising the Spanish flag.

Studio Equator has successfully designed two new restaurants for Simply Spanish, keeping within their existing model and interior design concept but managed to bring a modern and contemporary energy whilst allowing each restaurant to be unique in their own way. Simply Spanish is now open and serving their paella in the Queen Vitoria Market, St James Square CBD and the South Melbourne Market!
