In 2007, Studio Equator developed visual identity and interior design for retail restaurant Simply Spanish at South Melbourne Market. The restaurant has a casual, market feel that complements its location, and has been wildly successful.
By 2011, Simply Spanish had become so successful that owner Leno Lattarulo secured the tenancy next door in order to be able to expand this popular Spanish tapas bar and restaurant.
Studio Equator was given the challenge to create a new and exciting proposition in the tiny tenancy available. We wanted to keep the same atmosphere as the existing restaurant, but also give an added dimension.
The same timber detail and Spanish tile finishes were used for the counters and floor, and additional timber beams running crosswise from the bar, along the ceiling and down the opposite wall were also added as a feature.
To complement this feature, we designed custom graphic wallpaper made up of Spanish icons illustrated in a modern way, and unique to Simply Spanish (bulls, matadors, flamenco dancers etc).
As the extension was to focus on tapas and wine degustation, custom shelving was designed above the bar, to run the entire length of the bar and house and display the wine on offer.
Finally, to complete the look and feel of the bar, a vintage Spanish door was sourced and installed to invite and welcome guests into the new space.
