JESUIT SOCIAL SERVICES:
DOING JUSTICE

22.12.09

Jesuit Social Services is a charity whose human services work includes engaging and supporting the disadvantaged through social activism and community service. 2007 saw Jesuit Social Services reach 30 years and this milestone was the impetus for the development of a book reflecting on the History of the organization: Doing Justice: Reflections from Thirty Years. Jesuit Social Services 1977 - 2007.

Although all the photographs and text were supplied by the client, studio equator was given creative licence in creating a concept and look for the book.  The style of the text was anecdotal, so each of the "stories" was given their own chapter, with a different style of custom typography for each chapter heading.

A "coffee-table book" layout was used with the emphasis on the photography and the text widely spaced, easy to read, and with several quotes and excerpts highlighted in different colours, sizes and types to add interest.

The Jesuit company colours blue and orange were used throughout, bringing together the different styles of each chapter in a cohesive whole.  The application of these colours as an overlay on some of the black and white photographs reinforces this, and gives the book a retro look and feel appropriate to the subject matter.

Fold out pages were used to enable more photographs to be included, and to give the book an extra dimension.  As a final touch, a poem which was to be included in the book was made into a mini-book which slips into a pocket in the back cover with each page displaying a verse and a photograph.

The Jesuit History book, "Doing Justice" was also adapted to digital media, and can be viewed online at http://www.jss.org.au/about-us/30-year-history
