COCOA BEAN

08.02.07

Situated in the heart of Melbourne's CBD, Cocoa Bean resides in the most important modernist building in Australia, the former BHP House at 140 William Street (Architecture by Yuncken Freeman, Skidmore Owings & Merril).

A smooth steel and glass prism reticulated by the structural frame in a graphic statement, the building has been an urban icon since its completion in 1972. This heritage listed property offered a restrictive yet rewarding challenge to create a café in line with its minimal manifesto.

studio equator's strategy was to create a space that beautifully flowed into the existing foyer, using only the highest quality components of glass, marble and pure stainless steel. The result is a cohesive space and new asset to the precinct in the spirit of the modernist values.
