South Korean designer Soojin Kang has covered a range of second hand chairs in a patchwork of fabric.

Called Patched Chair, the square version will be on show at Mint shop in London this September.

Today’s mass-production and disposable fashion are deeply problematic. Current fast changing trends and low prices that promote consumers to buy more than they need has pushed people to easily throw away their possessions. Soojin is fighting against this epidemic with needles and threads.

Dressed Chairs are inspired by traditional crafts and antique raw materials, hand made by Soojin; Obviously, the scarcity of the antique furniture used means the total number of editions produced of each piece is extremely limited. Each piece is therefore entirely unique. Dressed Chair challenges a new aesthetic statement and it crosses the boundaries of art and design.

The designer believes that the lack of consciousness with which people easily throw their objects away will increase even more in the future. It is important now therefore that we consider our basic needs and what we already possess, and use these materials wisely and beautifully.

"Using craft techniques and a combination of antique and raw materials is the logical means by which I work through these issues. The craft tradition conveys a considered thought process and has always recognized the value in reusing and re-purposing."
